Where the hell do these people get lists of all the forums on the Internet? I mean seriously, I have been learning and working very hard on my latest project and people keep going to my site to register and then just add a link to their home page. They never contribute to the forum, they never post or even reply to one stinking thing. I know its human because my forum it behind a human question and captcha.... Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that they are spam bots !!
They want to 'advertise' their sites on your site, but they don't know the correct way to do this. Rob
and how does that answer the OP's question? it doesn't. spammers find these forums by searching for "Powered by PhPBB or Powered by SMF its the copyright at the bottom or the version info that gives up the location of forums on the internet. do a google search, powered by phpbb you get around 62 million results. its the same with vB or smf etc. it'll be difficult to stop them, maybe placing restrictions for new members so they cannot post live links etc..
It is so hard to stop them, i didn't have any ideas to stop them, but i told the thread starter why they are doing it. Rob
I just removed the home page option from "edit profile" page. I am using vbulletin, but I think it must be possible with other forum scripts too. Also I have a 7 day and 20 post minimum requirement for signatures on my forum, to keep away spammers. .
I really dig these ideas...Thank you. I am going to look into getting rid of the copy write and adding a minimum post before a home page can be added....
removing the copyright is probably against the terms for using the forum software. removing the "Powered by" is not a problem.
I wonder if there is a way to automatically moderate every new users first couple of posts. Basically prevent the users posts from appearing until their first has been approved.
Damn...I'm going to shoot over to PHPBB and check out if I can pay some dough or something to remover the link at the bottom...maybe I can make it so just that text doesn't get spidered....maybe I should have used NextBBS instead of PHPBB
