Google rankings change all the time - and google uses many different data centers. I see you in the 19th position. You might want to consider targeting another keyword that gets more daily searches. With about 15 searches a day for dog forum, a number 1 ranking would only bring approximately 6 - 7 visitors a day.

Thats strange, I live in New Zealand and if I search pages of the world, not just pages of NZ im on page 6 for "dog forums"

If I use google.com im on page 3 which is past 20, where are you searching from?

If your site is quite new this is even more normal. Newer sites often start high and drop back after some time. Then when you build backlinks your rankings start to increase again, but you won't notice/won't think its good until your site gets better rankings than its original position.

google shows dog forums being searched about 5,000 times a month. Which seems closer to what i would think it would be.

You must be using a broad search estimate, not an exact match.

There isn't a right or wrong tool. SEOBooks tool uses various data to give an estimate. Google adwords also has a tool, but those searches include network partners so they are usually going to be higher. You have the ability to choose "broad, phrase, or exact" match.

    Google explains the differences:

    https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6324&ctx=tltp

Using the leaked aol data, you can estimate the amount of clicks you might receive depending on your ranking. A position of 1 -10 receives approximately 89% of all clicks, meaning you really need to be in the top ten unless your keyword has a huge search volume.

Ranking Number 1 receives 42.1 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 2 receives 11.9 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 3 receives 8.5 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 4 receives 6.1 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 5 receives 4.9 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 6 receives 4.1 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 7 receives 3.4 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 8 receives 3.0 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 9 receives 2.8 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 10 receives 3.0 percent of click throughs.

So if your keyword receives 2,000 searches a month, and you are ranking #9 - you can estimate it will receive 2.8% of the total searches, or 56 clicks a month or about 2 per day.

Vary up the anchor text a bit with "dog forum" "dog forums" "dog message board" and "dog discussion", even "dog talk".

I think my best focus now would probably be "Dog Training Forums" looking at the estimated clickthroughs from the SEO-Book site.

    Thanks mjewl!

Use more unique keywords like the other said and take advantage of the all the meta tags your site can use to become unique to the other websites.

Yeah it does seem to change quite often, I like that google dance saying its a bit like that really changes so much latley!

I have a PageRank of 3 and have built up a lot of quality backlinks, I am hoping I will increase pagerank this update and rank higher.
