    Hey DP,

I need help, been reading forums for a month now but am still wondering what you guys / girls think the best way to start organic traffic is?

I have a site I've owned for 6-years but never put in the effort.

    UNTILL NOW

I don't expect miracles, and love to put in the work. Dont care if I make a ton of money (Wouldn't turn it down though.)

I've started by submiting my site to aprox 900 directorys.

I know original content is king.

    What next?

    Any help is apreciated.

    THANKS!

    Andy-

try getting links from sites related to your niche

and if it is marketable also by words of mouth, do so by referring to your friends.

if its teens and young or community related, try being active in forums and social networks and refer at times or put links in sigs 9as long as no rule violations)

all depends on your niche though..
would you mind saying what your site's about?

Right now it's just an article site with adsense. the general niche would be the internet / html / hosting focused on noobs or people trying to start a site with limited knowledge

if you allow article submisisons by visitors, you can simply post by stating people to post on your site for free and give them featured or better spots.
That way you will get more articles submitted.

another method is a bit tedious. You may have to join forums (related forums) and see in threads to see if anyone is in need of something and if an article on your site will be a help to them. If then, give them the link. Gradual link building method.

you could buy unique articles or write more your own, promote each link in stumbleupon or digg (not excessively though) at times.

    Thanks kaung,

Yea, Some of my motivation comes from Grown up Geek .com. I actually was a member of his site and like the idea of a membership forum site that writes itself. I want it to be myown though, I hate the thought of copying people. I take alot of pride in my work.

    Any other thoughts are appreciated!

the niche your in is fairly saturated, but its always possible to build something, you just have to stay extremely consistent with new content as often as possible.

relevant backlinks with relevant anchor text
    niche content constantly updated

those things will get you on your way if done over time.

Here are some things you should do to get it going

    1. Write articles and submit them to article directories
    2. Write fresh content for it every day 2-4 articles
    3. Write as a guest writer at websites. Contact them to allow you to write for them and in turn allow you to put a link to your website.
    4. Spend a little. If you believe your website truly has great content get ppc account and advertise. You have to in the beginning.

    That is to get going

I was going to say the same thing when I first saw this thread but then when I read 6 years - the guy has been waiting. But perhaps his not doing anything overshadows his patience.

I got the impression he had some site he registered 6 years ago... and wasn't doing (almost) anything for more than 1 month. I also think that patience and waiting aren't necessarily two same things... you need to DO something, but be patient for the results to come. It's not like you can sit 6 years doing nothing (but waiting) that will get you anywhere ;)

    Thanks guys,

This site was kind of a pet project that I got too busy for. I liked the domain enough that I just kept on renewing it and my hosting. My other setback is that I'm a noob and self educated in the web arts.

I still dont know if I really have a grasp on what I want it to be yet but I thought I could start building links etc.
There is content (quite a bit actually) now but its not my original content and I'm not proud of it.

    Thank you for your advice!

I need all I can get!

    Hey,

Is there a benefit to having a site that old?
Will it help my ability to get a page rank?

Nope. Domain age doesn't matter... what matters is how long your site has been indexed...

If you aren't happy with the content, then I suppose that could be the first starting point.

A couple of days ago I opened an account with usfreeads and posted a half dozen ads. Within a day my traffic increased about 500%. (sounds like a lot but I had very minimal traffic before). I received quite a few click throughs, which resulted in a few commissions. Needless to say, I will be putting in more ads and finding other classified sites that I may post to.

directories are "ok"..but i actually gave up submitting to directories since everyone and their mama submits to them.
I think its more productive to actively participate in (insert buzz word) "Web2.0", that is, submit your site to bookmarking sites, stumble, digg, propeller, keep lists going and add friends and blog and ping.

Directories are very "last year" :)

article marketing, start posting in forums within your niche (non spam) with a link in your signature. Get a blog going as part of the site and post to it at least every other day and start getting links from social bookmarking sites, especially StumbleUpon.

Those are some good starters that will give you some good traffic. If you're domain is 6 years old then it's probably a good one. Build a decent amount of daily traffic and you could probably sell it for a nice profit

This is an area you may benefit from going offline with. Consider slipping the local fix-it guy a 20 to reset beginners home page to a PC maintenance post on your website. Consider contacting those PC Guide type magazines about doing a column. Basically think about how new computer users are going to find your site. They are a little hesitant online, so try hitting them offline.
