Stomach Surgery for Weight Loss Gastric bypass surgery, commonly referred to as stomach surgery, is one of the more preferable methods of bariatric surgery (weight loss). The reason it is preferred is that it is the safest of all methods, and also has very few complications. Its results are also shown to be very satisfying and consistent. So, how does “stomach surgery†work? The surgeon makes a small area near the top of your stomach (a pouch). Then, a bypass is added around an area of your stomach and intestine (small). The person’s stomach is stapled at the top, causing it to blocked from the rest of their stomach. The pouch created is very small and can old at most an ounce of food. After this, the small intestine is cut and sown onto the pouch that was created. This causes all the food ingested to be redirected. Food will not go into the second area of the person’s small intestine (the jejunum). This causes the person to not be able to absorb calories like before. Even without food, the stomach remains healthy through using digestive juices. As mentioned before, the surgery has been proven to be very safe and effective. After the surgery, you cannot eat for about 1 to 3 days. This allows for your stomach to completely recover. You then follow a diet for about 3 months, beginning with liquid only, then softer foods, and final back to regular food. Since the stomach pouch is now so small, the person has to eat extremely small meals. During the first half year, if the person eats to much, they will vomit excessively or experience severe pains. You may also regularly (for the first while) experience things such as body aches, tiredness, chilliness, very dry skin, hair loss, and severe mood changes.
