WrodPress stopped uploading

I've used WordPress on my blog for a very long time. I still use 2.6 (and it's updated to the latest ver on the branch). I've never had problem using Upload feature (non flash) when inserting pics into my posts. One day it stopped working - asks for file, acts as if it's trying to upload, then reloads frame and acts as if everything's ok and like it's uploaded a file - but there's no file on the server and nothing showing up in gallery :(

I checked the folder permissions ( 777 ) and ensured that setting for upload folder is still correct in WP. Any ideas on what else I can check?

Did you try changing folder permissions to anything else other than 777? because some web hosts will make the folders which has 777 permission inaccessible. They identify the folders which has 777 permission and apply the policy - this is being done automatically.

    or

you can upgrade the wp to the current version, it would help

It is highly recomended that you update wordpress to the latest version for security reasons.
If you are not able to upgrade it please change permissions to 755 and see. If it still does not work, can you browse the files in the gallery? check if its uploaded but not displaying?

tried with both 755 and 766. I also downloaded whole website, and did a diff of all files with a copy from couple of month old backup which was working -- they are identical.

Maybe a file ownership/permission problem. Do you have SSH access? - I might be able to have a flick through if you want.
