You want to set up a company like paypal? You will need a multi-million budget before you start considering marketing. What is your unique selling point that differentiates your service from paypal etc?
Phone Visa etc and ask how much reserves you have to pay them to become a card authorisor and then times that by Mastercard, Dinners, Amex etc. Add on to that the regulatory reserves you must have, eg the FSA if you intend to be able to allow people from the UK to use the service.... it adds up exceptionally quickly.
I also wanted to do the same until I heard about everything that's involved. Actually building the site, direct connectivity etc is the easy part. (...easier part!). The legals side is a nightmare. The better solution for startups, is to use someone like MetaCharge who have an advanced API which means you can white-label the process and hence make it look like you are the payment provider. Saying that, you still can't store any of the credit card information, specifically the CVS (3 digits on the back) number without approval from VISA, MC etc. Since you can't store any CC details, you can't then run subscriptions for your customers and hence you then loose various features.
You can never store the CVS/ CSC/ CVV/ CVC (and all the other names for it) number as it is against all scheme rules - they can only be used for authorising a payment and then must be purged from systems. Only the card issuer and the card scheme are allowed to hold the CSC number and then the access control for it is massive
Yeah I thought that was the case however I was always confused when it came to repeat billing through third party payment providers. i.e. how does PayPal, WorldPay etc handle repeat billing, surely the 3 digit code is required for this? Any ideas?
no, reoccuring transactions go through a seperate merchant id which does not require the CSC number as long as the initial transaction did have it
Should qualify the above with saying it is how it works in the UK - given the growing internationalisation of companies etc I would imagine that the processes are the virtually identical in most counties where the likes of Visa operate. I knew the 5 hour presentation on credit card processing I had to sit through with Streamline would come in handy one day
What about adding paypal to bill someone to give access to a site? Does anyone know how to add this feature
