wpmu subdirectories not working

    I am banging my head against the wall.

    So we are taking over a website as their current agency is not really looking after the site.

    The site is a WPMU site with the main site at www.domain.com and one other site at www.domain.com/advice/

    WP was at 3.0.1 ( I know a real joke ) and I upgraded it to the latest 3.9.1 version but now the second site doesn't work. I always get a 404 and the title of the page is Nothing found for Advice but then gets redirected to the www.domain.com

    Now I have checked htacess and wp-config files and they are fine.

    Next I have installed the rewrite rule inspector and checked the url the result was

    (.?.+?)(/[0-9]+)?/?$index.php?pagename=$matches[1]&page=$matches[2]page

    So it is actually looking for the professionals page which doesn't exist.

    Does anyone have any idea what else I could be doing wrong.

    PS. I did reset the permalinks already

    after a lot of research and testing I came to the conclusion that the 2 versions ( 3.0.1 and 3.9.1 ) are just to different and it just won't work.
