WP upgrade questions

    Hi all-

I made a mess of a WP upgrade last weekend and had to get my host to revert my site back to where it was 24 hours before.

I'm going to try again, and I've gone through the steps carefully, but I have some questions. The detailed instructions say:
    • Do not delete the wp-images folder. I have no folder like this. I do have an images folder under wp-includes and another one under wp-admin. Do they mean one of these (both of which I am supposed to delete)?
    • Do not delete custom content or plugins. Does this mean do not delete your plugins or only plugins that you have customized?
    • Delete the file wp.php. I can't find this.

As always, thanks for any help you can offer.

Got an answer on the WP support forum:

"Don't worry about the wp-images folder or wp.php--that's left over from WordPress 1.2.

Leave alone (don't delete) the entire wp-content folder--that will protect your plugins and themes. "

Take a complete backup of your blog, then if you mess it up you can just reupload the files. Take it at a folder at a time, and remember files that you have edited for plugins etc.

To follow up on DarrenC's comment, my question is what's the best way to backup? Through a Wordpress backup plugin (which I have), or to do an entire database backup? I'm assuming the WP backup plugin just backs up data, not themes, customizations, etc. but not sure.

    I do both DAILY!

I use the WP backup plugin (which is great!) and that downloads the .sql file for the database.

I then FTP and download the contents of my server on to a 180GB external hard drive I have for backups.

You've just given me an idea to blog about :)

Bonk! OK, lights are on now.

It's so blatently obvious that a complete file backup should be done, but who does that? I know I don't. Who's going to start doing it? Me. Hard drives are cheap enough these days. Thanks for the inspiration/reminder.

I'll check out the write-up on your blog. ;)

I did end up doing a full backup, which must be a lengthy process for anyone with a large blog.

The upgrade was successful, for the most part. I ran into only one problem. I put up a new page, then decided to delete it. It told me I wasn't authorized, even though I was logged in as admin. I found this thread on the WP forums. I haven't tried the plugin, but the work around takes care of it for now. I just clicked edit and scrolled down to delete, instead of trying to delete directly from the manage pages screen.
