One advantage is the ease of use. There's no need to know HTML, css, etc., and with a few plugins the management is taken care of automatically. Posts and pages are automatically added to the sitemap. It can even create and submit an xml sitemap for you. It automatically pings sites, and you can even use plugins to ping the social sites like digg, twitter, etc. automatically when you post. And there's so many other plugins that can automate certain tasks. With a self hosted WP blog you have total control over the domain.

The disadvantage is you need to update WP frequently because it's open source and hackers can find ways to get in so they constantly update, but it only takes a few clicks. But whenever WP updates you'll probably need to update the plugins as well, but again it's only a few clicks. No problem if it's only one site, but when you have dozens of sites it's a hassle, but there's several plugins for that also.

I switched from HTML over a year ago and haven't regretted it. If it's a small site with just a few pages then a static site will do, but if it gets large WP is so much easier.
