I have not used a category hierarchy (not sure if thats the correct term ) but for one of my blogs im going to create a parent category with a fair amount of child categories underneath that parent category, only the one level deep though, i dont need to go further than one level, and understand that too deep can sort of break some themes i think. But if you use parent and child categories, have you got on ok with this, regarding indexing and things like that? im guessing it would be pretty much ok? as its not too deep.
yes, absolutely. there are no problems with parent and child categories at all, at least I have not experienced any in nearly 2 years! good luck with your blog
I am only using parent categories structure at all my blogs. Actually never thought of adding child categories. Is it good or bad from your point of view DON.
I think it is a good thing...I mean especially if you have a very broad category... just like the forum categories here, you know? it keeps things more organized, I think
categories are only good from a Usability perspective. Gives the visitors more options for going to a sub category. From an SEO perspective, I usually make my categories non-indexable.. And the someone said it right, the subcategories creates unnecessary indents in the side bar.. You need real good themes to handle sub categories, eg a drop down.
Excellent arwen54 and thanks for the good wishes. For me so far i have only used parent category structure, until the need has come up and now i see a use for it as il have plenty of categories to add, and adding them to the existing ones as all parent categories would make for too long a list. Thanks Blogspotter, il only go one level deep and i see what you mean about categories being more of a usability thing.
When your posting to a child category, do you always select the parent category too, or only the child category when saving/publishing your post?
I use the parent & child categories on my blogs. I don't think it makes any difference but it makes it easy to browse if the blogs deals with a wide category.
Ive added a child category but it appears like a parent category on the sidebar, is there anyway for it to only display after having clicked on its parent category?
perhaps it is not defined in the theme coding ? and are you sure you are submitting to the child category ??
Hi danger9918, yeah ive definately submitted it to the child category, as you point out maybe its not defined in the coding, i will have to find out if theres something else i should add to the code for that, if that is the case.
