WP-cron.php disabled by host - What's causing this and how to fix this?

I have received this message from Hostgator (I'm on a shared server):

We were forced to suspend the script "/home/******/public_html/*******/wp-cron.php" as it was causing a high load on the server, and due to this affecting all of the other accounts on the system, we were forced to take immediate action for the health of the server.

I'm a bit confused about this, because I never had this problem before, and I don't know what could be causing this or what I can do to to fix this.

I'm running a WordPress 3.1.2 blog, to which I'm posting several times a day. There are quite a lot of posts. (When the problem appeared I was still using the previous WP version)

In my list of recent pagevieuws (registered by kStats plugin), I see a lot of direct hits to /wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron. I don't think I have seen them there before...

    Any tips?
