I have never realized how important this was and once in a while i would put something in the alt tag of images, most of the time I wouldn't. But today while messing around with google search... I punched in a keyphrase, that does not appear anywhere but in alt tag of one image on index site and NOWHERE else on the index page, and little did I know my site was #1 among 2M+ results. And I just added that image couple days ago. How about that. Now lets all go add the alt tags to images Hope this helps
Was the alt tag part of a link, or a normal image? dimva the syntax is <img scr='logo.gif' alt='Buy my stuff' title='Buy my stuff' /> Code (markup): alt doesn't seem to work with firefox so i add the title as well.
You right it does not show up in firefox as a tooltip but I guess google absolutely loves it. At any rate, I got some work to do now, to doublecheck all the images, might as well slap the title on there too
I'm with you. I want to know more info before I chalk it up to the alt tag, If it was that easy then anyone could stuff info in the alt tag and rank high
The text within the ALT tag is viewed as any text published on your Webpage. I am unsure on how it stands against Header tags for example.
those basic on-page SEO shouldn't reflect so directly to the rankings at Google SERPs. But it doesn't mean we can ignore the use of alt and other tags. I guess I am happy for you that you did see a good result simply using alt tags. But I would think first that there might be something more important factor that changed your ranking than alt tags you used.
alt for images and title for links are very important and add value to the link the same way the anchor text does.
Yes...alt tags can be a real big help...especially when you don't have any text on the homepage. For instance, I have four images/icons on my homepage and I am just not able to put any text on the page (without sacrificing the look or hiding text). Yet, with some good link building and alt image tags, I was able to get the site up to #2 for the term "things to do" (among many other terms). They are a must!
well the thing is, that the image links to the page with that particular title where there are h1, h3 and all that with those keywords, but the home page actually shows up as #1.... since I guess subpage has not been indexed yet, its only been a couple days site pr5, age ~3 years, yahoo shows about 156k "inlinks" easy on the questions, im busy with modifying tags, jk
I just redid one of my sites and added alt tags an a few other things and today it's ranks went up a ton. I went from doing 12k uniques a day to about 18k today. Not going to give all the credit to the alt tags but I think some of the credit is due to them.
Yeah, I think that once you get a ton of traffic you have been doing something right as it is, and then every little thing can give you even a bigger edge!
Hai.. after knowing the importance of alt tag... even i use it in my blog pictures also u can see here ... seoay.blogspot.com
The alt tag is one of many on-page optimization factors, but don't give it TOO much credit. Just a tip: For those of you mentioning the alt tag "not working" in Firefox...that's because it's not supposed to show the alt tag info when you place your mouse over images...It does in IE only because Microsoft decided to make it do that, against standards. That's not how it's supposed to work. If you want to make the text show in all browsers use the title tag.
"site pr5, age ~3 years, yahoo shows about 156k "inlinks" Well, that is what important, not that ALT tag, it just made the difference
well thats what i meant, if you have brand new site alt tags wont do anything for you, but they could be very powerful once you get going a little bit
