Thanks for all the comments, everyone. Certainly wasn't redirecting traffic but that 2,000 clicks was over a LONG time. The products offered were CDs for artists just from fan pages so the traffic was targetted as far as that goes.
Maybe and maybe not. Proper target goes beyond just "music to fans of music" or "water to people who drink water." There's a series of items to look at and targeting goes deeper than simply looking at top-level "categories." But perhaps the issue is the product (CDs). I'd be marketing Amazon's MP3 service, which is great. The quality is beyond what you get at iTunes and it's all DRM-free. I started buying from them instead of iTunes when possible (their catalog is still growing).
I actually had never thought of that instead of CDs of an artist on thats artists page, it could be mp3s. Sounds like a plan I'm willing to implement. Thanks for that. Will let you know how it goes.
If I were you, I will remove the Amazon ads. This will divert the clicks elsewhere where you can earn much better.
Experiment, yes, but don't assume that those people would have clicked elsewhere. They clicked, because they were attracted to that specific object. 2000 clicks one place could just as easily be 100 clicks or less somewhere else. I'd set aside a time period to test other mechanisms, such as AdSense. Just make sure you set realistic periods, because you want to be able to extrapolate the data. So, one-day periods are out.
Conversion rate is pretty key - I combine both an aStore and referral links directly to products. My aStore is a link on my menu and mentioned throughout the site. However, I get good conversion with individual product links when tied to subject matter. I need to add more individual product links since the conversion rate is pretty steep on these. I have even had ok conversion with a simple Amazon logo! My site is somewhat niched so my traffic (and promotion) is my strategy. I also have my own catalog with products that cannot be source elsewhere. Check out my site to understand my point and strategies. Also, since it is PPS, I encourage friends to shop through my site! www.oldstocks.com
Yeah, that conversion rate isn't looking so hot. I know for me, it's been a sour couple of months. I'm not sure what to do
Would do better removing the amazon links and adding newletter signups or something. That conversion rate and earnings for amounts of clicks is way too low to be driving visitors away from your website.
