I launched my site on January 29th, 2008. With hard work, I managed to get on page 1 for specific keywords. Today, I am on page 6 or lower, WTF? The only thing I did was move my blog from a subdomain to a subdirectory and resubmitted my sitemap. I doubt that was the cause. Nevertheless, I restored my structure back to its previous state. I am still on page 6.
A sub-domain is treated like another site. If you absolutely have to move it, be sure to use a 301 redirect AND a new sitemap. Even then you can expect a drop in rankings until the new location is processed.
Thanks for responding. I wasn't clear in my posting. I added a blog to my website and put the blog on a subdomain, because I read somewhere by doing so, I can create an easy backlink to my website. However, a co-worker told me that if I got rid of the subdomain (which was just another URL pointing to a subdirectory) and referenced the blog as subdirectory in my website that Google would count that as new content which is more valuable than a backlink. I don't know which is best. I have reverted back to a subdomain and I'll see what happens. Again, thanks for posting.
Hi scoop, I don't think that this is a reason behind your down fall in ranking. It has happened because of "new site effect" as google provide some ranking to the fresh site but over the time ranking start to going down so just do your seo work properly............... no need to worry
There is no real advantage in using one or the other, the problem is that if people linked to your subdomain, the juice from those links go away when you move the content to the subdirectory. I think you were given bad advice. You need to do a 301 redirect if you want to move the content and google is going to realize it is the same, not new content. If they didn't, you could get a duplicate content penalty. If you're already ranking #1, you have to be real careful about making changes. There is no upside, only potential downside.
Your site is new site, so you will see many ups and downs in search results. Build lots of Back Links.
Normal Google Sandbox effect, it should be back to the place it deserved in a couple of months as you build trust and age.
