Been there, done that.. Got the boot for actually doing work.
Yeah, missed that date format.. Ok, so July 5th, but whatever... its still a "UNDER CONSTRUCTION PAGE".
The average editor is in charge of how many listings/categories?
Its pretty easy to catch things like this by simply going through cat you are in charge of as an ODP editor and looking at each link from time to time.

And based on the number of editors you are responsible for just about 11 categories or about 53 listings.

An hour a month would keep that clean. Heck, it would even leave time to actual review and list new requests.

And as you have permissions in around a million cats, that's proof beyond any doubt you edit in each and every one of them! Right?

 

I'm not responsible for anybody but myself. I am responsible to the ODP community.

I avoid the ones in languages that I don't understand.

Also, as any fule kno [1], I'm primarily a Regional editor.

Hell DMOZ can't even keep its own about page devoid of 404's.

Jim, how many of those 1,007,233 categories and 4,897,671 sites are languages you don't understand?

Seems that 11 category and 53 listing's you're in charge of may be an even smaller number. I never took into account that those million categories consisted of other languages. Thanks for pointing that out.

 

Hmmm.... If I am not mistaken, that would be grounds to remove a site from the ODP. I wonder if any outstanding editor would be willing to do that

EVERY SINGLE foreign language link is broken in just about every part of the site.

Hell the About page has not be updated in 7+ years.. what does that tell you.

 

That what we keep saying, that it is run by hobbyists in their spare time is correct and that we maintain it the best we are able as editors and do not claim that it is run for profit or professionally. Editors collect and collate sites as their hobby offering as much time as they are able for use by anyone who wants collated data to search the net.So what do you think it says other?

 

I've got a few hobbies too. I tend to put 110% into every one of them. Its not a hobby if you're doing it half ass.
Anyway, I don't think its too much to expect someone to update 7-8 year old dead links at a site that proposes to be the poster child for and ODP.
