A paid directory is definately worth more... But only if you are the paid directory owner LOL.. any how I think there is some good Free Directory's out there. To many people assume if they have to pay then it must be good but many times that is not the case.

I'd submit if the domain name looks good to me.(no expired domain and it's directory related)
All directories start with a PR0,so why not?

It depends on different factors. There are some free quality directories out there and I submitted my site to them.

I submit to as many free directories as I can.

These directories give a little marginal benefit. DMOZ and some other established free directories are exceptions.

My sites, which have links only from free directories, don't do as well as the sites for which I have bought links. However they do get little traffic, so I would say free directories should not be completely ignored.

New site, maybe but after reading John Scott's article on the topic paid vs free. I"d probably just fork out ~200$ and submit to 5 big ones. That will get me crawled. # of backlinks aren't that important. I know PR6 sites with 41,000 Backlinks and PR6 sitse with 1,600,000 + backlinks... :D

I accept entries that are put in the right category and also are on my topic. I am sick of people who cannot understand I don't need their car sales site or get rich scheme in a webmaster related directory .. in this case I reject 100 % of the links :D

Otherwise .. all sites are personally added. I don't put nofollow on links, I don't have any tricks .. and I do have free directories.

I'm submiting to free directories when I have some more free time and when I like the directory. Many of the free directories where I have already submited my sites are now paid only directories with good PR. I think the most directories start as free. I'm offering also free submition, but that will not be forever...

Only a couple of free directories are worth it, and normally you need to pay a featured listing or else go to page 10 so a “free link” is not really worth it.

I have PR4 for my site www.jeffbrowninc.com without submitting to free directories!!! (I would have submitted to less than 50~100)

May be submitting to free directories may increase my PR to 5!

    Hello...

Well i have someone who submits my directories daily to new FREE directories coming out and and i dont see a problem with it...

I will pay a premium and spend my $$ on only directories that will have a future in that i know the owners will always stay on top of them.

    thx

But you should not discount free directories as they provide link to some good quality websites who do n't have enough to buy!

I can agree to a certain point....

Off those Free directories ill be submitting too...
chances are that 50% will close thier doors within the first year and 25% will not be able to keep thier directory up and will sell out...
so my remaining 25% is the ones that im glad i grabbed free as they convert over to paid once they get some good PR or the directory owner is capable of doing promotions and ill be already listed and it cost me nothing...

    thx

Yes sir... Submitting to free directories takes so little time (10 minutes a day)and you have nothing to loose... 75% of them will go bye-bye but at least I still have the 25% that I got for free! I probably have hundreds of directory listings that I got for free over the years that are now good PR 2, 3,4 or even 5 backlinks.
