    Interesting question...

Most SEO guys would say that even though their main profession is SEO, they also have a broad understanding and practice on Online Marketing as a whole.

I wouldn't mind my son getting into SEO but i would also suggest he broaden his horizon beyond seo (no offence intended seo guys, :)) and perhaps have PPC under his belt to be more of a Search Engine Marketer as opposed to optimising websites.

I will do, if his field is computer and technology. One thing I will put into my mind, I will not force my son to be involved in one situation if he don't want to. I am thinking that someday, he will be mad at me. I will just support his want. For he to be happy.

SEO is a great business today but I am not sure only SEO should be selected as a business. We should select "Internet Marketing" as a complete solution for a sustainable and growth oriented business.

well seo is pretty simple unless your talking mega corporate seo or heavy comp seo.. The main thing I would say is, "son, can you SELL seo"?
and if he can, then yes. Otherwise, no.

SEO is not stable business and has a lot of competition. Also this kind of business can be outsourced.
    I prefer doctor or advocate.

I would suggest him to go for something more stable.. Since SEO is a highly dynamic field. And he can do SEO even without spending 6-8 hours at a stretch as a side business. Always have a stable main business where u can earn for longterm. SEO is too competitive and ever changing and HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON GOOGLE. I wouldnt base my bread on a company that doesnt even like me (SEO's)

I have two grown sons. One is a CPA, one has an MBA. No, I would certainly not tell them to go into SEO. They would be leaving established, good-paying jobs to take a flyer at a new job, in a new field, with small likelihood of earning a living wage over the long haul.

Good-paying jobs.... Hmmm. I do not like this safe-me-mama-with-a-good-paying-enroll.
With SEO (Online Marketing) you can forget on being dependant on undercover intrigues within a company to withstand those good-paying jobs.

Google is also highly dependent on you and don't forget that. SEO is about making your site relevant to your users, there is no tricks to it. SEO is involved from the start of your website to the very very end when you decide to shut it down.
If google starts showing bad results then people will change to bing and yahoo, remember this is how google got their market position in the first place.
So although google are a major corporate company, they are still dependent on US, the webmasters.
If you want to use dirty tricks to rank your website, then google will catch you and your site will be no more. Ohh and how does google not like SEO's when they advise on the best ways to perform it.
