OK, so I came up with an idea I'm almost done implementing but not sure if I should finish it because I don't know if people will like it/use it. it is for bloggers. I'm coding a website where you can register and then add your blogs to your profile (add your livejournal, blogger.com, wordpress, etc). So you put in the URL to your blog, your username to the blog, and the password for it. you can add as many as you want. pretty much like how Flickr allows you to add blogs. but then you also add your mobile phone-number where you send SMS's from. there is a phone number for the site where you send it SMS's and they appear on the blogs you added as if you posted them! You don't need to put in your username or password or anything in the SMS, just what you want to post; since it knows the number you SMS'd from and the blogs associated to it. oh and it is all free; though support by clicking on ads would be nice. i also plan to charge very tiny fees to people who actually profit from their blogs and don't use it simply for personal/non-profit use. so is this cool? would you guys who blog use it? if not, why not? would you not trust putting in your blog's password to another site? is it stupid because SMS's are only 160 characters? is there something obvious i'm missing? I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
To be honest no I wouldn't use it for various reasons. 1) I don't like giving my passwords 2) I prefer typing than sending sms 3) SMS messages are too short 4) I wouldn't be able to add pictures
fair enough, thanks for the honest response. that is what i was afraid of most people saying too. but i may give it a shot, since i love coding and it is just for fun. also, i know my friends on livejournal would like it, which i built in support for. i just wish posting to myspace could be done because it would attract a lot of people; but their system is closed and i don't have the time to work around it. thanks again for your response.
To ever put into a posting for people to click on the ads on your site. No matter how you word it, whether you beg for this, or say it would be nice, it is not good form to do so. If you have adsense on your site, you can be banned for saying something like this in any way shape or form on a forum, your website, or elsewhere. Google has big reach and lots of people to reach farther. Just a word of caution.
oh of course, i know. i have adsense on there but read about that. i don't beg for it or put in anything telling them to click.
Now, I wouldn't use that service but if I was young and stupid (and lots of people are, just visit myspace for evidence) I just might. Consider a big night out going to XYZ bar for drinks just met hunkiest guy ever what was I thinking, just saw him in decent light but check out his mate bah, no talent here, going nightclubbing row with ex boyfrined hooked up with other friends, complete with photos home atlast - but alone, sob and so on Would people use it? I reckon they would And down here there's a service you can get where just before you go out you lock out certain phone numbers from your phone and it stops you phoning your ex, your boss, your mother while you're plastered. good luck, sounds like fun!
sara, that is what i was thinking too. more for a younger generation or 'fun blogs'. not many 'pro bloggers' can post their long articles and such via SMS and they wouldn't post their dinner contents on that kind of blog either. but a younger crowd i could see going for it. the blogger.com and livejournal users i think are my key demographic here. i WISH i could interact more easily with myspace though and allow posting to the myspace blog. but they have no API and i don't have time to write endless cURL scripts to post to the site. thanks for the encouragement though!
Most people interested in posting via their cell phones would already know about moblogging, which is sort of what you're trying to do, but instead of sending a text message users send an email. WordPress supports post-by-email natively and I can only assume other major blog programs do as well (or at least have plugins for it). So I hate to burst your bubble, but there's a less obtrusive way to blog by cell!
well my SMS blogging idea is complete! Those of you with a Livejournal, Xanga, Wordpress, or Blogger account: check it out and let me know what you think! it is at http://www.letmeparty.com
Looks cool, good luck with it! Another possible use could be for backpackers to blog easily while on the road. Can I post photos taken with my pxt camera?
thanks sara. you can upload MMS pics from a camera phone via an email address to just about all blog software. what i did only uses SMS because it is cheaper than MMS (multimedia messaging service).
