Would this work for #1 spot on Google?

I've noticed a competitors has an url that is singular in #1 spot (it is not a trade name!), I have done a lookup and the plural is available.

2 options - (1) buy it and redirect to my site or
    (2) create a different site, build links via article submission

Would this result in the site beating the competition? They only have 3 backlinks and PR0! Backlinks from directories PR0 (yahoo explorer) But the site has been around for 5 years...

Problems in my view for my option
site new (but google might "love" it and put it up there in pole position??)
time in building backlinks & cost! Could be done quickly with 2 articles submitted using Prometheus's service (Ive used him before EXCELLENT service!)

This tactic works on people typing in the incorrect url by adding an "s" as the product is refered to in the industry in the plural.

What do you think? Give me reasons why and why not...

As far as i think google loves the old sites, more old your site is higher the ranking it gets but if you will get more and more quality high pr backlinks things might change even for a new website... will have to see what our gurus here have to say about it ...

Thanks for that, the only thing going for the competitors site is that is aged, it has only 3 backlinks and PR0!

How can I get round the age thing?? Would getting a few EDU backlinks help???

When it comes to backlinks the actual domain name extension has no role what so ever, this is a big misconception by a lot webmasters and even so called SEO consultants. However, many sites with the *.edu domain extension have very powerful web pages in terms of link value and authority. It's the quality of the backlinks and the content that make the backlink.... not the domain extension.

I sometimes get annoyed with so called SEO experts who just don't have a clue I guess thats the problem with SEO too many diffrent options. I on the other hand don't offer advice unless i can back it up with hard facts so beleive nothing what you hear and half of what you see.

When you have to use dialog to learn, evaluate and test concepts, then it is nice to hear the SEO Experts' viewpoints. You get different sides to an issue. We read between the lines and have great respect for the SEO Experts who have positive things to say.

    Hey Geester1,

This is what I would do.

If I read you original post correctly, the site currently on the number 1 position has very little incoming links but still has the number 1 position. This tells you clearly that the competition for the keyword that you are targeting is of very low competition. Domain age is a factor and comes into play when you have a keyword that is very competitive. In your case you can easily take number 1 by getting the right links back to your site as you have correctly noted

If I was you, and if the niche was worth it, then my approach would be

    1. To register the domain name that is available in the plural form, build the site with a minimum of 10 pages of content and then get it to rank by building enough backlinks.

    2. Register another domain. Do the same steps above, no cross linking between the two.

Get two domains ranking on page 1 and get a bigger pie of the traffic via two sites sitting on page 1. This way you still benefit from typos and if you can mange a double listing for both sites, you will now have 4 spots out of the 10.

All this of course depends on whether the keyword is worth it.

    Good luck.

i think buying the domain and putting unique content would be better than a 301 redirect. i bought a domain recently of a celeb without the dash. the most popular site in that niche has a dash and a bunch of link already existed mistakenly without the dash. i'm building content and i'm on at the 15th spot after two months of work. i'm thinking i can get to the first position after more work.
