    Would this work?

I'm thinking of starting an info site with directory and other things in a particular niche. I am also going to be offering web design services at a later date relating to this particular niche.

I'm wondering how to go about structuring everything.

I'm thinking of creating 2 domains..becuase the first site will be up and running 5months before the web design part..would it make any difference if in the menu i put "web design" and the link directs to the web design domain?
Both sites would have same colour scheme so customers would know both sites are owned by the same business.

Surely if the (lets call it this for now)"info" site is 5months ahead linking to the newer site would help? taking into account this site would be optimised.
would the web design part get out of the sandbox quicker,by being backlinked into the info site..(the menu link on the info site)..which in turn the info site would have backlinks into edu sites etc.

Can anyone see any problems with this idea..or benefits?
maybe i could create a temporary page for the web design domain, rotate some content to rank it up quicker...

    Hope thats not too confusing..

has this been done before..can anyone point me to any examples?

    thanks

it would probably help a little, but the PR of the second site would have to be established all by itself since it's treated as a totally new site

There are advantages and disadvantages to every possibility. Subdomains and different directories on the same domain are two options. Those two ways would make it obvious that it's the same site...but then the "stickiness" of the name or url wouldn't be there with that

I've seen this happen with subdomains branching off of a related popular site and they were successful

    I see your point.
The reason for 2 domains is so when i optimise the web design part/site i can submit that url to SE's,dir's,blogs, etc. and be more targeted. It means those just interested in web design will find it more easily..well thats what i think..
    likewise with the other url.

I was thinking that both urls would have a common "name",with an extension..(probably the wrong word)..example..
ok this is a basic example..
redapple.com and greenapple.com or even reverse ..it depends on the names i end up picking..which i haven't. Becuase this whole idea is only recent.

You said the 2nd site would have to be established by itself and treated as a new site,..>
well i was thinking of creating both at once, but focussing more on the content of the main one..with the 2nd one having a basic template ..even if i create a blog on the 2nd site..to get content active..which should help PR.

I've got to sit down and draw out site map i think...

Another thing i could do,is figure out ways to monetize the site..at least prepare it to start bringing money in,when i'm ready to launch my web design services..so if the web design site isn't popular/or i'm not bringing in much that way..i'll have a small income coming from the other source..
i'm still open to suggestions here.
