I'd like some opinions on whether this would pass page rank. This is part of an URL from a directory. <a id="id_585" href="http://www.SomeSite.com/cars/" title="Some Site" onclick="/cl.php?id=585;" target="_blank">Some Site</a> My question is about the onclick. I'm guessing that a search engine spider will only see the href and the url text and so this would be good link even though it will not go straight to the site when clicked. Any other opinions?
you could test this, by adding such link on a spidered page to a new target(not indexed) and see if they index the href or the onlick
Almost all directory scripts use oncllick to track clicks. It is SEO friendly, you'll get counted for the backlink.
even phpLD has < a id="." .. in it link to link pages but i am not sure about the onclick should try it out and spider our page with a simulater the above link you have posted is search engine friendly
some spider simulators don't work as Google would. A good idea is to get the page indexed, and then check the cached copy of the page, using the 'text only' thing.
Well if anyone is interested I have a test set up. The indexed page is http://www.topwebsitetips.com/SiteMap.aspx The link code is <a href="http://www.topwebsitetips.com/Test1.aspx" onclick="../Articles/WordTracker.aspx;" target="_blank">Test Pages</a> so we shall see if test1 dot aspx gets indexed. I'm pretty sure Masetek is right it should get indexed.
We have lot of directories using click tracking and they are in google and showing links in BL. So they are SEF's
Well, it finally got indexed by Google, so the big three all ignore the onclick. I did check for any other links to the page to make sure someone wasn't being helpfull and desided to help the search engines out. Only link to the page was from the link in question. (at least according to MSN)
