Would Starting a Directory be a Prudent Choice Given the Recent Google Penalties?

I would like to foray into creating a general, niche and bidding link directory to add to my passive income, but I'd like to know if you established directory owners would recommend starting directories.

Please give pro's and cons' of starting a directory, with special regard to google penalization policies.

A common question asked, in a way its like saying should i open a corner store because there is already 100 of them.

Yes there is always going to be new directories start and old ones close.

You state to make a few extra $ yes i suppose that is possible although the gap between the newer resource directory and the old school directory is getting wider each day, so there are a few choices, 1. make a cheaper version and fill it with ads and run it free or a low fee etc, but i see these dying out quicker than a flower garden in a drought, or spend a few bucks and develop a higher quality directory, then these come with their own burdons as they require a lot of work in a sense and can become a dedicated lifestyle not just a hobby.

i suppose you need to way up if it's in your blood but just starting one to maybe earn a few bucks may not be the best way to move.

If you are not sure an alternative may to to buy a cheap established directory ( one that appeals to you ) run it for a while, if you like it sell and upgrade to what you want if not sell it and recoup your costs.

 

It really depends on many factors and more broadly on how you promote your directory and what is the aim behind starting the directory.

Dont worry about "google" as what happened to many of us was done in hatred and envy
and nothing to do with "Paid links" or "Guildlines" but just retaliation due to someone being
called "QBC" whom then got his buddy to stroke a few directory owners..

End of story...

There's really nothing passive about running a directory. Plus, the more you approach this as a passive project, the less valuable your directory will be as a resource, and therefore the more likely it will be to incur penalties from the search engines, either manual or through their algos.

 

Sure some have been penalised others however have become even better and have been recognised as such

Unfortunately i think way too much emphasis is put on PageRank, people should be concentrating on SERPs as this is where the visitors come from... that being said their will likely always be a place for paid linkage however how long PR will be around for who knows.

I'm actually looking around to sell 2 of my exisiting general directories (both with unique designs) if you'd be interested daily... just drop me a pm.

And there is no such thing as QBC some lame term that just poped up to suite someones own needs. , and if someone cares if they are called QBC its just sad story basically.

 

I agree with Sabian1982, too much emphasis is put on PageRank. I just recently lost all my PageRank on one of my Real Estate Agents directories. Have I fell down in the SERP's ...NO, this site is ranking #6 on Google for the term Real Estate Agents. I'm not sure why I lost all my PR, but I do think people pay too much attention to PR.

Well I'm using Google.com Right now I see my directory us-realestatedirectory.com ranking #6. It is usually there for most of the month. Every now and then it drops off and I can't find it at all. You must being seeing a different Data Center.

 

If the aim is to get "get rich soon" it is a complete waste of time.

 

Its thier at #6 where it should be
as i just checked and its thier as he said it would be.

You should start a directory if you have a desire and committment to create quality and see it through. It is a personal choice only you can make. Do the research and see if it is what you want.

Don't do it expecting to make a bunch of money as there are much easier ways to make money in the world.

Do it because you have a desire to create a quality resource.
