Would someone evil look for average domains then buy/reserve the domain after the current website expires? Has there been such a case done before?

thnaks, onem ore question I would like to ask here ratehr than creating its own thread.

    Warning! ---- a newbee question
What's the diference between shared hosting and dedicated hosting? Why do they differ so much? SHared hosting has lot more capacity, bandwidth etc.. yet dedicated ones are more expensive and much lesser capacity and bandwidth.

Shared is a server you share with other sites. Will be cheaper and recommended for small-medium sites.

Dedicated is a server all to your own. It can hold huge sites and tons of bandwidth as well as letting you have alot of control over it. Only recommended for BIG sites with a ton of traffic or if you want to host alot of sites on one server.

I had a domain, RememberThe11th.com, it was just a memorial site to the 9/11 attack.

I had never done anything commercial with the site. Some (expletive deleted) somehow got it from me and for a year it was a bs parked site with all commercial links. I managed to backorder the domain and got it back, but I think that is a rarity for lost domain names. So, yeah, it happens that some jerk tries to steal a name.

I still believe to this day that the correct rules were not followed as I lost the domain immediately upon expiration, no warning, no redemption period, nothing. All's well that ends well.

The site is just as it was designed in the week after 9/11, no chages or updates have been made. Hmm, I should probably go back and fix some dead links. You can see my attempt at a memorial site here, it has a huge photo section of 9/11 photos.

Good to hear that you got your domain back, I actually have one website hosted with Lunarpages. They told me my free domain is for life. SO I should not worry about my domain then? or some stories behind it?

Sounds like it's a subdomain hosted on free webspace? In that case you dont own the domain.

Do you think it's a sub domain? If it is a sub-domain then do you suggest that I buy it?

Honestly, if you think your site will be worth more than $8 then buy the domain yourself. I would be very concerned about letting someone buy the domain for me and offering it free while I host with them. Can you leave and host elsewhere or do they get to keep the domain you built?

How is that 'stealing'? People buy expiring domains all the time and if you were unfortunate enough to forget to renew your domain then it's just too bad. No-one is stealing it from you. They are buying it fair and square on the open market.

I'm not saying domains can't be stolen. There are plenty of examples (e.g. sex.com) but there's a big difference from someone buying an expired domain and someone dishonestly aquiring a domain.
Domains are traded by the thousand every day. While I'm sure there are 'evil' people the majority buy and sell domains like any other commodity.

Simply, it was out of my account the day it expired. I had no chance to renew. The process did not comply with the ICANN rules for expiring domains. I did not know better at the time and did nothing to protest. It was not stolen, but in my opinion was purchased with some trickery, as I was prevented from renewing a name that should have still be able to be renewed by me.

Since it was not a comercial site, it cost me nothing in damages, so it was not worth pursuing legally.

Obviously I do not know the exact details but unless you renew a domain it will get removed from your account when it expires. The redemption period is more or less up to you to sort out so unless you actively go after the expired domain it will be lost to you. I don't see any trickery in that.

I guess the lesson to be learned is not to leave renewing domains to the last possible moment.

Yeah I like to keep all of my domains on auto renew so that they stay and I don't have to worry about them unless I actively want to drop them, instead of the other way around.
