Hi. We just launched a new site comroads.com It's a geolocation based video streaming platform for dash cam videos. I'd appreciate any constructive criticism you might have on the idea as a whole and of course the execution (UX/UI) and layout. What particular issue we're facing is that we noticed that people don't realize that the map is navigatable and simply ignore it. Any ideas on how to emphasize the interact-ability would be greatly appreciated.
Well, maybe it should clearly say somewhere: "Move the map to see new crashes" or "Move the map to see crashes near you" or something like that. Your concept is good, your design isn't. A small map, tiny thumbnails just make it so not user-friendly. Abandon that slider and make it look something like:
I quite like it, I'd probably just move the category and country selection to the bottom and put a simple statement at the top. The cursor changes to a hand so people should realise but I guess that might not be obvious to all. The idea of grabbing a map and moving it around is used by sites like AirBnB too which will help.
Technically, there's no grabbing available on ipads / cell phones. And I can't call it dragging either, since it's more like "swiping / sliding". But, obviously, everybody still refers to it as "dragging".
fair points. A bigger issue might be that I get hugely different results on my phone. Compare the screenshot above with this one from my phone... The site looks much more active on my phone. Not sure why the query is different but you might want to look into it.
Hey guys. Thanks for all the feedback. Thanks Sarah for the comment about moving the category and country. Maybe we'll try that and add a statement there as well. As for the discrepancies between mobile and desktop - there aren't any. They use the same database and show the exact same videos. We do use a cookie though to keep your settings, so if you chose a certain filter, we'll remember it next time. I think you might have chosen a certain category on the desktop and forgot to reset it, which is why you're seeing less there than on the mobile. We might revisit this though since we're now displaying videos as overlays instead of a new page.
Must have chosen a filter, tried a different browser and got the same as I got on the phone. This label should probably be "non-motorised vehicle"
