Hi folks I launched my new site www.fotoviva.co.uk at the beggining of december to sell a few of my photographs as posters and canvas prints. A friend of mine built the shop and I branded it with my design knowledge. It uses tables and .asp pages if that has any effect on optimisation. As far as marketing it goes, I bought Aaron Wall's ebook and read that, submitted the site to as many free directories as possible (mainly the ones he suggested, and also a few pay ones such as aviva and alive. I have also added the url to several photography related forum profiles and sigs. I currently don't have a reciprocal links page but I could be persuaded If anyone can offer some SEO suggestions after looking at the site I would appreciate it very much. Thanks!
Great looking site! and it seems pretty decently optimized. One thing I noticed is that you need to change your Fotoviva (homepage) link in the navbar from href="default.asp" to href="../" or href="http://www.fotoviva.co.uk". Other than that, your looking good as far as I can see. Start promoting it and get some links!
Thanks Volare, sorry to sound like a newbie at this - I am! but what difference will this make to SEO?
The search engine spiders see domain.com and domain.com/default.asp as two totally separate pages, even though to us they are the same. Thus, for seo reasons you don't want to split your links between the two. It is the same way for www.domain.com and domain.com.
Sorry to bump this thread but I was hoping for some more SEO suggestions Also, as the site was launched early December and I have been marketing it in this first month, will I have to sit back and wait for it to get higher on the Search engines? Like will it take a while for links to kick in etc.? Thanks
lets see... you have the two paragraphs following your h1 header tag enclosed in h2, and h3 tags.. a whole paragraph as a header is a bit much and looks spammy. You could use mod rewrite to make your links a bit nicer.. like static pages instead of siteaddress.com/viewer.asp?filter= a general site problem would be that its not configured for 800x600 sites.. which its sad to say make up 15-20% people. ---------- On a side note you might consider using adwords to drive some traffic to your site.. especially if you have a high conversion rate. This can drive paid sales quickly, and doesn't take much time to start.
Thanks for your help klown. I will remove the h tags from paragraphs then and keep for headings. The size of the site is like that because that's how the guy who developed the shop did it, but I guess it future proofs it as more and more poeple use higher res screens So the mod rewrite makes links more SE friendly? I'll have a look at that but have never used it before. I see there's a sub forum on it here so will try and work it out. cheers Jas.
oh dear there I go bumping again but I have another question about the site and we may as well keep it all together! I have a popup window come up with a larger image showing for each photograph. Currently I only have the title and description being repeated with the larger image. Should I add a load more keyword type text in the popup? Would it make much difference to SE's? Do SE's like popups? Thanks
