Worth buying old domains?

I'm looking to do SEO on some websites and just wanted to know what the experts on here think about the value of old domains in escaping the SandBox.

Logic tells me that I should only buy old domains that actually have websites on them and not just a "this domain is for sale" page because the former are indexed and trusted by Google.

But I see auctions for many domains that have no websites on them but are selling for ridiculous prices (because they're 5+ years old). If the website isn't even indexed by Google is there a benefit of buying such websites?

Or should I just forget about these old domains and grab a new one. In that case, how long on average do you have to wait for your website to see decent rankings for keywords if you were to buy a new domain?

If the domain is good for your business go and buy an old domain :) They are much better then new domains

This is not for a business. It's just a website where I plan on making affiliate commissions from and so of course I wanna be loved by Google faster.. lol

check the PR, check backlinks, if both r good, then buy old domain names, otherwise buy new ones
