A better question would be "How many search engines spider themselves" since there are many "Meta engines" that pull results from many other databases including spidering engines and directories like DMOZ.

You can get a start by looking at the following page.

    http://www.searchenginesinternational.com/wst_page2.html

But since folks start "so-called" search engines everyday there is no way to get an exact number, just like there is no way to get an exact number on directories since just about everyone on this forum has started one of those also and some are combination search engines and directories.

That would be a good idea to have a directory of the most popular search engines in the world sorted out by country. I would like to feature the best ones on my Search Engine Blog
Can anyone lead me into the right direction?

No one knows about how many SE there are. There is only a handful of real SE that generate most of the traffic on the net. Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves.

Do you know what percentage of web searchers uses Google, Yahoo! or msn in Great Britain for example? I have never seen studies but would be interested to know.

is there any reason why anyone would want to be on these other engines?
they must generate only 0.1% combined of all searches?

I agree, I just have a couple new clients in Portugal and somewhere and was wondering if it makes sense to get them into their own search engines as well.

I realize that Google dominates the web in English but that's not so in all other languages.

In other languages Google may have the most listings but doesn't mean that they are being used the most.

I think it's possible to create a search engine still in Asian Languages that can compete with Google especially if it's totally optimized for the Asian market & marketted by established companies.
