World's tallest building, Burj Dubai, set to 'oficially open' Monday

The world's tallest building is set to 'officially open' on Monday.
    • What do you think about it?
    • Would you live there?
    • Do you think it's an attractive building or a monstrosity?
    • How much do you think it cost?

Here's one thing that I want people to comment on:

It has its pro's and con's in many respects. Everyone loves tall buildings and great architecture, especially in a great location. But no one wants to really talk about the "slave labor" thats been used to construct it. I use the term in quotations because they arn't slaves by definition, but more so "captive labor" if anything - since a lot of the workers have had their passports yanked from them as soon as they got to Dubai. But I'll leave the rest of that discussion up to anyone who wants to comment.

I wouldn't live there but, the building is fascinating, I saw a documentary on how it was built and it's amazing the technology that is used to build something like this. It must've cost a few billion Dollars at least.

I've never seen any info about the workers on the project so I wont comment on that.

I have heard that the top part swings 6' on either side. It would really take a lot of courage to stay/sleep there!
The bad omen associated with 'The tallest building of the world' continues...I guess! :(

They say history repeats. In the 1920's (during another economic bubble), a group of investors where ambitious enough to build the world's tallest building, the Empire State Building. However, it was completed in 1931, the bubble had collapsed in 1929, and this was the start of the 'great depression'. The building was mostly vacant for the next decade.

Construction of the Burj Dubai was started in 2004, the very height of the global real estate boom. It is also completed a couple years later during the colapse of the bubble. The Burj Dubai is mostly vacant as well.

Continuing the comparison, the empire state building stood as the tallest for 40 years until the first of the world trade center towers was completed in 1971.
