What are the world's largest hosting companies, i have googled for a list but haven't gotten any relevant results. So i though if we could make compile a list here. I'm not looking for the BEST just the LARGEST providers

To get started some of the ones that come to mind off the top of my head are as follows, let's see what we can come up with.

    1. Hostgator
    2. Godaddy
    3. 1 & 1
    4. Netfirms
    5. FatCow
    6. Dream Host
    7. RackSpace
    8. Media Temple
    9. ThePlanet

Depends on how you count them. Number of servers? Number of clients? Number of domains hosted? Number of sites hosted? Do you count active sites? Parked sites?

There's really no one answer. If you read the fine print on that webhosting.info page, they're making a lot of assumptions as well. That and the "Don;t assume that this is correct" and "We're only counting a select few *.TLDs" warnings.

yes the webhosting.info seems to be skewed beyond belief.
what is the industry standard for such measurement, does anyone know?
Perhaps number of clients, & revenue would be the best indicator

yeah i hear ya, especially here on DP, what's new?

Depends on who's asking really. When I see promotional type on sites, it's either domains or sites with no mention of a ratio between number of clients. Considering that's always going to be the highest number available, that's probably why it given.

When I do numbers or get asked in general terms, I report shared client count and state it as such.

Somebody also compile a list of small but reliable web hosts like vade.ie and others.

Doreo hosting is quite good though not so reliable; A small orange is also nice.

Considering Hostgator exists within theplanet/ev1 space, your order is a tad off.

    http://www.hostgator.com/network.shtml

And of course biggest doesn't always mean best.
