Ok, so if you haven't heard of the Proposed Time/Calendar change you can check out the article here or visit the official site here. I suggest starting with the article though. Basically the new clock would be "Universal Time" aka Greenwich Mean Time. So what would be different? That you would be the ONLY time in the world. So no matter if you're in the UK, US, or Australia it's 3:00 everywhere. Now it might be sunny where you are, or pitch black, or you could be getting up to go to work, but it's still 3:00... The other part of this is the calendar. I'll let you read the article on that... I know this is a pretty well blended international community so I'd like to hear what you think.
it is not as easy as it looks. i was born following this time scheme and to have it changed will take some huge adjustments..it sounds so akward.
Besides, when you're having an IM with someone and you say "what time is it for you" you have a context. If weirfire says it's 2.48 I then have to find out the location and other info to get a reference for 2.48. Thank goodness Richard Conn Henry is just a crackpot, overpaid, academic with no other way to get a profile!
I read the article...I think its more of an ego thing...I'm the guy that changed time !!!! I didn't see a single convincing reason to change the length of months or the time.
Personally I like the time thing. GMT runs in the background of everything as it is (look at your forum options). Maybe it's just because I'm tired of clients & others who always seem to screw up time zone conversions for meetings or other things. So that I wouldn't mind. The calendar is good where it's at though.
The problem with unifying time is you lose all reference. If someone told you something happened in Australia at 5pm, you would know it was while people were on their way home from work. If 5pm lost all meaning, news stories would never make sense
Little bit of trivia for you... If Sept is 7, Oct is 8 and Nov is 9. Why is september the 9th month, october the 10th and nov the 11th month? . . . . . . . (short answer) When Julius Ceasar was killed, he was diefied and given a month (July). It was given 31 days so it was the longest month of the year. When Augustus Ceasar came to power and later died; he was also diefied. His supporters thought he was so wonderful that they gave him a month too (August). They thought he was just as wonderful as Julius, so they gave him 31 days too, and put him next to Julius (as he'd be in the heavens, of course). So every other month had to be pushed back twice to make room.
I would rather the US switch to the metric system before making some silly change like that!!! It's funny how easy the metric system is, yet we stick with halfs and eighths to measure things!??!?!?
