I here a lot of people lauding the seo value of wordpress. It's easy content management! But my question is, as a young seo, do I really need to learn anything but wordpress for content management? Should I learn Dreamweaver as well just in case it's ever needed?
Wordpress is a self-sustaining CMS system. You don't need to know anything in conjunction with it. At least, I never had to.
Basic html is really all you need to know. And that's just if you want to make changes to the template, add adsense, etc.
Don't learn Dreamweaver - it's a great design tool but crap for SEO. WordPress is a cut down CMS and while it's a great blog (I use it) it's not the same as a CMS. With PHP skills you can use plugins (or use other people's) to make it more useful. I have some plans to extend WordPress for a niche industry to make it very useful. But bear in mind that a CMS like Joomla (check out www.opensourcecms.com for alternatives) will give you far more power to "content manage" WordPress is great for SEO though
Ultimate Tag Warrior FTW! If you use wordpress you better be using UTW or something like it. -the mole
I'm with you on that one. I've integrated it with a custom code amazon plugin and it's great. I don't use all the technorati type features - it has alot in it. And it's Kiwi Made. I don't know Christine Davis but she's written some very cool code there
There are many other blog CMS systems that are as good as Wordpress. I am partial to PMachine because it is now free and offers a great user registration system.
I mostly use Movable Type but Word Press needs only minimal tweaking. Just make sure your entries use category and entry title and use the "slug" to increase the meaningful of your URL. Once you have enough entries you can add extras like the plugins for tag clouds and related entries. Richard
