    Hi all,

I'd like to upload WordPress to my domain and have it be the index page of the domain.

I've been told to FTP it the the "public_html" folder, but what is it?

Anyone know how this is done?

    Thanks for your help

wherever your index page currently lies.

sometimes a host will give you a few folders for your site like public_html, cgi-bin, and maybe a logs folder. Others will just have you put everything under one top level directory.

Just put it wherever your home page currently is.

If you have FTP access, you will login and see a large list of folders, one will most likely be public_html. One above it should read public_ftp. You may be using CPanel or another admin interface. Let us know.

Try using smartftp to upload the files. It works well with windows explorer.

Talk to your webhost about the ftp address, username and password you should be using.

I'd check to see if you have Fantastico installed on your server...

That way you can set the whole thing up in a matter of a few clicks.

public_html is sometimes just called 'www' as well (as a folder on your FTP server).

OK now the original question probably has been answered I'm going to hijack this a bit.

    WordPress vs Mambo

I need a CMS. Needs good picture uploading as well (SEbasic did you get it working?).

Which one would you go for? And why?

Wordpress file uploading isn't that great... it's separate from posts. On the other hand, you can set up e-mail posts and it is as simple as adding a file attachment.

Haven't used Mambo so couldn't give a proper anwser.

Yes, l;ast night at about 3AM I finally got the image upload stuff working for WP (By using the WYSIWYG Plugin here http://www.moiblog.com/)

It works bloody well I have to say...

Let me know if you want to see it working...

Also, having now played with WP 1.5 a bit, I can honestly say that using WP as a full CMS is a lot easier because of some of the new features - "Pages" is the one that makes 1.5 a lot more versatile...

Also, WP is now template based as opposed from running everything straight from the index.php file with makes it a lot easier to skin than it used to be...

    Edit:::
This plugin allows you to upload images from the post writing screen. :)

Does WP cater for user management i.e. multiple user access?

Yes, the user permissions are quite comprehensive.

just give wp a try real quick. The install is literally five minutes. Mambo is a lot harder from what I can remember. I haven't looked at it in years, though.

You'll need to install some plugins to get all the functionality you need I should imagine...

Both are in my Fantastico list so might indeed just run them together for a week and make up my mind.

Choose Wordpress. I installed Mambo via Fantistico and it was hacked into and deleted for me. :( My Wordpress installs, however not installed via Fantistico, have always been great.

Oh and thanks for the image upload plug-in. I really need something like this. I usually use Flickr.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

Unfortunately this host does not have fantastico :-( and they don't have any folders when the domain was new.

I tried uploading it to the root, where the index.html and everything is, but that didn't work either.

That is an enormous question? You would really need to be more specific to get an answer...

That's not really enough information for us to help you.

What happened when you uploaded it? Did you get to the install page, or did that not work for you? Was there an error during the install?

WP Install is famous for being one of the easiest.

    1) I installed stattraq for blog stats (only useful if you have a blog separate from the rest of your site)
    2) Installed referrer karma because referrer spam is horrid for me
    3) Click the box to moderate comments. Comment spam is coming.
    4) I added holdem to the blacklist in comments. To much Texas holem spam. Thinking of adding poker too. ;)
    5) perma links or whatever they are called. So the urls are more SE friendly.

    Those are my starter points.
