After Google buys Wordpress platform according to reported news it is going to be a paid platform just like Amazon Web Services did to dozens of free programming languages that are now paid services but were free of cost before Amazon Web Services acquired them.
Would Google buying a web content system, charging for its use and then subsequently favouring websites created with said method not break some sort of monopoly law?
Yes Google is going to buy Wordpress blogging platform and I think they will do the same thing as Amazon Web Services did with dozens of free programming platforms or other services AWS bought which were earlier available for free.
I don't think you've quite understood what i was getting at here, would it not be illegal under monopolyism laws for google to buy one of the most used website creation services, charge for it, and then favour these sites in their algorithm?
Wordpress is open source. Google is acquiring Automattic, which does major Wordpress work. If Google does really pull a string off, then there will be a fork off WordPress which will continue to be free(Free as in free beer). Something like SuiteCRM and SugarCRM. The only concern would be that of security updates. There has to be an active community to get quick releases. Otherwise, most websites in the world would be a sitting duck.
I think self-hosted WordPress core will stay free. I think you will have to pay for hosting on Google Cloud Platform and for early updates.
We are all talking theory here. If this was to be considered news, then there would be some source. You should ask the OP where the info came from to debate truthfulness. So, if this was true - what do you think about it?
The poster may have a misunderstanding between Wordpress (as a CMS platform) and Automattic (a company). Wordpress cannot be "bought" or acquired as it is an open source system. There's nothing to be bought in an open source system, there are no intellectual property rights and no ownership as such. It's freely distributed code, it's a community of users. Automattic is a company, which can be purchased however. They control some of the largest WordPress projects out there (Jetpack, WooCommerce, Wordpress.com). In the news, there might have been rumors about a possible acquisition of Automattic by Google but there is no confirmed source, it's just a rumor.
