im just looking for something easy to get started. i want to make an information website and I dont have alot of time.
The best way I can give you is to search for Wordpress Magazine Themes. I used Arthemia and Revolution for some past projects I have done. I know because I asked the same question a few months ago. Magazine Themes can be somewhat tedious to originally set-up, but if you have a good knowledge or even a little knowledge of Wordpress they are not too bad. One side note.... Have about 10 articles doe before installing any of the magazine themes, because without content, you do not get the real feel of what the site will look like. Even if you need to create test articles. Next note, understand that you must use the excerpt function. This is what will show on the front page, rather than trying to squeeze the whole article. Once you get familiar with the theme you are using it is usually smooth sailing. PM me if you are having a real issue, I might be able to help you out.
are you just looking for a better WP theme than the default, or are you looking for a simple "static" page site? WP can be forced to look like a small website (like 3-5 pages). Might be a good solution for smaller clients that would like a CMS solution. Semeasy has a good point of the magazine themes, but they do cost money. There are tons of free templates that may work too. It all depends on what you are wanting to accomplish.
well maybe wp isnt the best option for me than. i dont want a huge site, but it would have more than 3- pages. i dont have money to put into building it right now though.
i think the key is to strip out all the 'blog' type items, blogroll, latest posts, feeds, etc... so it's just very basic with the main page linking to your other pages and not much else.
i would like to do that, but i dont know how. if anyone knows of a link where i can find out how to do that it would be very appreciated.
It's simple... just create the pages that you want to have on the WP page editor. And then go to the settings area and change the setting for what to show on the home page from "Latest Posts" to "Static Page"... and select the page that you've created for your homepage. That will turn WP from a blog to a more static site. Or you can go for one of those themes that turn WP into more of a CMS than a blog... like the Magazine themes mentioned in prior replies.
