    If you have lot of websites, update them, its required practice, update wordpress would reduce the risk of hack.

    I cannot guarantee that your current website was hacked due to old wordpress but it can be a strong reason.

    Seems many of the hacked sites are at one webhost: "Texas - Sugar Land - Landis Holdings Inc" - I suggest moving to a better host, with mod_security and proper security measures in place.
