Ok, I am putting a new blog up and i don't know what url format to pick.

First of all... I am considering using 'almost-beautiful' urls.

    like:
    http://mysite.com/index.php/2007/12/my-cool-article

Is there any disadvantege on this? I find it more practical not having to carry a .htaccess around. Does anybody knows how bad ( if it's any bad ) is to have that 'index.php' there in the midle? Vbulletin archive pages have it in a lot of cases... it doesn't seen to be a problem

Then is the date... I think I prefer without date... it anoys-me that much stuff in there... any thoughts about this?

Finaly.... should I include '.html' in the end? why?

Id leave out the index.php if you can, it looks a little nicer :)

The dates are good too as it makes it cleaner for you to list things in your archive.

    I like the format

    /2007/may/this-is-my-blog-post/

No day, just the month in its 3 letter representation. Works well for me but probably equally as good as the 2007/10/10 approach in terms of SEO

    if its a blog:

    /date/blog-post-name/

    if its more content/niche oriented

    /category/post-name.html

    if its more serps related

    /post-name/

dont include index.php in the urls
its not relevant to anything..at all..
    hope that helped

You know, I hate dates in URL strings. They're great for archive links, but not blog entries. Besides, the further down you go, the weaker your keywords in the URL strings can become anyway.

    So here's what I do instead: yourblog.com/articles/blog-entry/

Note that I changed the default category name to "articles" and put the blog entry right after that. To combat "duplicate content" (which is an unintended side effect of WordPress's system), I use a plugin called "Category Base Killer" that was made by Brian Shoff. It also makes the links less confusing to people as well since they don't have to question whether the /articles/blog-entry/ URL or the /category/articles/blog-entry/ URL is the correct one.

On my blog, I go /catagory/post-slug

I originally used just the post name, but I ran into instances once or twice where my posts had similar names. Catagory/Post name works great for me. It is also search engine friendly.

I suggest you download SEO slugs, a WP plugin that lets you manually set the slug on each post.

You may even want to consider leaving out the date stamp altogether. It can have the unfortunate side effect of making your posts seem old.

Some posts have same names as categories, so I prefer using ../post-id/postname , or ../year/postname

I will put the postname only. Eventually i will edit the slug manually if it's to long.
Date is useless IMO, but i wanted to listen people's opinion anyway.
i won't include the category because of the reason mentioned by aislandas.

    Thank you all.
