I think what you're doing at the moment is probabally right...

Is there any way of verifyiing that there are in fact links pointing back to you?

    Like verifying the trackback...

I'm not doing anything at the moment. I was trying to moderate them but that didn't seem to work and they've stopped for the moment.

That's funny. In the recent interview with the link spammer, he mentioned how blog comment spam would simply be replaced with trackback spam now that rel=nofollow is out. I guess he was right.

You can notify a blog that you have mentioned an article by using an xml rpc ping. Frequently, the blog automatically posts trackbacks - which automatically gives you a deep inbound link.

The MovableType norel plugin adds it to trackbacks as well.

The problem is that comments and trackbacks helped to provide relevant results. The spammers are really ruining it for everyone if the rel=nofollow attribute is used on every site. The existing solutions handle it much better for most sites, but if you are superspammed, it the rel=nofollow works out better.

What anti-spam plug-ins have you tried? I just installed the default one with WP that requires you register for a wordpress.com blog account too. We'll see how it goes...

I install spam karma for all blogs I install. And I install them for clients all the time. It's a MUST in my book.
