Go for Thesis theme. It's a premium one but worth every single penny.

 

Holy cow, the Meters theme looks exactly like Mashable's.

I use the Mentor theme in wordpress. Is not quite like Mashable, but for $40 dollars you can find a great layout that can be really changed through playing with css and html.
I have had great feedback with it.
Along the same lines, I will try in a few months a new concept of web design that you might want to look into. Is called thegrid.io, it is a new concept and it might bring great things for those of us who do not have that much background in web design.
