Hi, i've just installed WordPress as kind of a test and i'm currently faffing around with the .css files and the template files in the default folder.

I have a couple of simple questions i wonder if somebody could help me answer...

    1. I have been reading about paying for somthing relating to WP and CSS, what is this all about do we have to pay just to edit the css files :s or can we do as we please?

    2. Do we have to leave the powered by wordpress in the footer??

Finally my main question 3. when i'm editing the template files namley single.php and page.php i go to upload them and i get informed that the file has changed on the remote server, so if i upload the file could i cause my system to crash?
Btw all i'm doing is moving the sidebar function before the content div is opened, and in case of single.php i'm adding the sidebar function because it wasn't on there in the first place!!

1 - No, you certainly don't have to pay. You are probably reading about a mod/hack that you have to purchase. However, you have total control over your files, and can edit them as you please, with the exception of the below:

2 - No, you must leave the copyright on the page someplace.

As far as i can tell if you have your wordpress blog hosted on wordpress.com then you have to pay to modify templates. :(
If you have your own hosting/domain then it's pretty straightforward to edit files. just upload and replace the css file etc.

and yea copyright has gotta stay in place.

If anyone is reading this and know's i'm wrong please correct me.

As a followup i think i can confirm that you may removed the "powered by wordpress" from the footer

Quoting from WP Mod: No it doesn't. It has nothing to do with the GPL, and though it's preferred around here that users retain something on their blog which notes their use of WordPress, they are in fact free to add or remove anything, including the "powered by" link.

Can somebody confirm this because the 2 posters above contradict this?
