Wordpress tags

    Hey,

I have some questions about my blog and the tags I use.

Okay, I own a Lil Wayne blog and every post is of course about him, such as pictures, news, videos and music etc.

Now when I am making the posts in the blog, I always add a tag called "lil wayne"... is this a good idea or is it a very bad idea? Also I did remove this tag from my tag cloud in my sidebar so it's not like the only tag that's got the biggest font.

And is it fine to add around 10 - 20 tags on each post.

Thanks and appreciate your answers :)

Who the hell is Lil Wayne ?
    Just kidding :)

What I usually do is make a tag for the main subject, and the action or description. So instead of using 20 different tags, I may do something like
Tag 1 : Lil Wayne Pics
    Tag 2: MTV Awards

Any more detailed descriptions and such I save for the excerpt and description box in All in One SEO

    I agree with hmansfield,

A better idea would be to stop using same tags for more than 4 of 5 posts. Make your tags like that. If you have a tag with more than 20 posts, you could start a seperate blog for it, isn't it? Also no one would have patience to look at 20 different titles in the tag.

So, it is better to make tags more specifically than you are using now. Also using 10-20 tags for a post is not bad its good for SEO and not too good for visitors impressions.

Since you blog is all one subject, it is likely that you will be using the the tag "lil wayne" quite a bit.
Nothing wrong with that since people search in phrases more than single words.
As time goes on and you have more posts, you will need to get specific with your tags:

Instead of just "Lil Wayne Photos" maybe "Lil Wayne VMA Photos", Lil Wayne Clubbing photos", "Lil Wayne Family photos".

Here is some reading on the use of tags that will help you understand their use a little better:

It's an oldie but a goodie.

Try to use differentiated tags to rank high in search engines.

Ok, thanks a lot, appreciate this post :D

    But when you say this:

What would be the difference if I used these tags:

"Lil Wayne", "Photos", "VMA", "Clubbing" etc?

    Thanks :)

Specifics. You have to narrow down your subject matter....your niche. Many sites like Technorati are tag based. People search for specific things. It is more likely that they will search for exactly what they are looking for, rather than a generalized subject.
"Lil Wayne" is a general search, and a general tag. "Lil Wayne Concert Photos" or just "Concert Photos" will bring targeted searches.

Much of that can be done with categories, but if you aren't going to be adding to a category regularly, no sense in making one for a one time subject.

It's possible I am not absolutely correct, but this is the way I have always done it.

Thanks for sharing... the article explains how to use tags really well.

Would you happen to know of any articles which offer more indepth information on how tags are good for seo?

But I don't have a category for Lil Wayne, so this is why I normally add that tag in every post I do.

Also wouldn't "Lil Wayne" and "Concert Photos" bring up the exact same result that "Lil Wayne Concert Photos" would?

    Thanks

Yes. So just you would use "Concert Photos" as your tag. I assume "Lil Wayne" is your meta and description information, and I see that "Lil wayne" is a part of your domain, so yes, that would be repetitive no need to put "Lil Wayne" in your tags....(Sorry about that ) I was just using that as an example.

Not off the top of my head. I'm not really a big expert in tags, I just happen to remember that particular article. I usually throw one or two on my blog posts and that's about all the attention I pay to them.

    Let me add some more,

When you are using tags as "Lil Wayne" and "Photos", your blog will go into "Photos" tag page where many other blogs pointing towards photos. Same is the case with "Lil Wayne". But when you use the tag "Lil Wayne Photos" it is quite possible for you to be the lone starrer in that page.

Also, in search engines, "Lil Wayne Photos" keyword search would always tries to get the results with the two words as they are, means continuous. Instead, if "Lil Wayne" + "[some content]" + "Photos" is in your blog, your blog is less likely to appear in those results.
