Wordpress site up and running, but got a problem. Host will not allow certain plugins

    Hi,
I am hosting my site with 1 and 1 and have the site up and running. The problem is that I am using a downloaded theme and some different plugins to those which 1 and 1 have as standard. This is what 1 and 1 said in an email to me:-

"Our click and build application is a pre configured website application, it will generate its own database and install the application for you. However you are not allowed to install additional templates, plugins, components in the click and build application. If you want to install new templates and plugins we recommend to install the website application manually so that you have an option to alter changes in your database as well as add some scripts using .htaccess."

My question is how can I install this manually, (or get it done), without losing the entire site?

I think you should contact with your hosting provider

Thank you for the answer Dave. I will attempt to do this later today, but not that confident I can do it.

You have to be able to install plugins and themes even if the installation was made trough the 1 click install. I personally never used it and I don't recommend it to anyone. Wordpress installation is very easy and frankly you will save only few minutes if you do the 1 click install, but instead you will lose control over the installation and you may regret further. You should install wordpress manually from now on.

Thanks for the reply. I have had it installed manually now, so I can now install any themes and plugins I wish.

upload themes in theme directory (/wp-content/theme) and upload plugins in plugins directory (/wp-content/plugins). login from admin panel and you will see those themes or plugins. Active them.

I saw some host won,t allow plugins because some plugins use many resource which may cause server load. So they avoid to add more plugins but still i believe you can add plugins this way.

1 & 1 is not the best option for an hosting provider. I tried them and run into a problem too. Contacting customer service they needed 3 days to answer a simple question, just telling me the same as above stated "You can't do that on our server". ???

The hosting I have now answers all my question in a matter of minutes with concrete advice and when I'm too stupid to fix it, they even do it for me (again in a matter of minutes).
That's what you can call customer service. All the rest is crap, I have no time to loose waiting 3 days for an useless answer.
