I had this problem with hostgator and i just moved to a specialized web host that's expensive and had no problems ever since.

It sounds like either your blog or the other sites on your shared hosting package could be eating up a lot of server resources.

Sometimes to many plugins cause a over-load on the server and crash's your blog. Review your plugins and remove ones that you hardley ever use or is useless.

You are on a shared hosting so you and everyone else hosted on that server need to do things to your blogs or websites to reduce the server load to stop the server from acting up. Ask to be moved to a new server with HG support or move to another host.

i think you have autoblog plugins installed on the site. these kind of plugins put a lot of server load.

Just check your site after disabling all the plugins.
Then check the site by enabling the plugins one by one.

remove plugins and try again. but hostgator always has this problem because their cpu limit is low. you can try another webhost may be.

One blog should not exceed the CPU limits - that's insane! I am guessing that either 1) Your blog got hacked and there's background activity you are unaware of 2) People are using your pictures in busy forums

I would check the main files (eg your theme's header, index footer files) for suspicious encodes.

PS - You don't have a proxy installed on your server do you? If you do, might be time to remove it.

It should be made clear whether the load is caused by too many database queries or by php scripts.
It can be made clear if you discuss the issue with your hosting provider.

If the problem is the database, I would echo each query to a log file, and then inspect the log file.
Of course this requires some knowledge on the sql and php

You can actually discuss the database credentials and also other relevant matters on what causes the server to be highload at hostgator.

If your database is big size (~30Mb<), let 's try to optimize it before all. Then you can choose vps solution (budget around ~5$ per month) to upgrade your space. This is my suggest.

As crumblepie has mentioned here...check a some of your files, namely: .htaccess, index, page, single, header, footer...same thing was happening to me...hacked through a none up to date version of Wordpress.

What theme you are using for your website? Also check it by disabling all the plugins installed on your site because they take lots of time in loading.
