Hi, Have set my wordpress blog up on my own domain and web space .... I have posted a few threads .... Now what??? what tools can i use to promote it? how do i get the search engines to index us? is there any good directories i can submit to? how does 'ping' work? social media? Need some ideas please on how to promote the blog?
That is actually a pretty lengthy question. I would start with the all in one seo pack and set your permalink structure to custom and use this as the entry %postname% that will give you site.com/postname. Hope that helps. Urgh, unless you are hoping to make money instantly and have something to test conversions on forget about PPC, you'll just be wasting your money. Focus on link building and SEO, write interesting content and twitter it.

not using my blog for ppc ... at the moment ... its still very new. im just trying to promote it and the posts i add. noticed a setting in wp admin area for ping? do i need to install anything for this? also social media? is there tools that i can use to push my posts to various social medias ???

The biggest thing is that you need to keep working on fresh content, perhaps even create a page or two to target keywords, and make sure some of your longer posts target low competition keywords. Try to settle on a good theme and stick with it for a while. Make sure you also get the key plugins set up because some of them can mess with things. Once you have that going, consider building some backlinks, but do not replace making content with building backlinks or any new visitors you attract will see a stale site and may never come back. There's a ton of things you can do to promote a blog, so if you're asking now what, the first thing you need to do is get listed in the major blog directories and secondly blogroll other blog owners and have them reciprocate. Your blog should be in your sig also so we can check it out..
You got tons of great tips here already. Just make a list and get them implemented. As others have said before, content is key. So keep writing. Your blog will do the pinging for you, so you won't have to do that yourself. Also, you may want to install a twitter plugin that announces new entries on Twitter. Set up your ezinearticles account so it will auto-tweet your new articles too. Then list your blog (or the squeeze page) in your ezine articles resource box, so each time one of your twitter followers clicks on your ezinearticles link, they'll find your blog. All of the articles are backlinks too! And yes, as openmindz has pointed out, list your blog in your signature at forums, including this one -- and also join other forums and do the same.
