I am moving to Canada in a a few days and I would like to keep a sort of online diary using a wordpress blog. I have never in my life used a blog so it will be a new experience for me.
What wordpress plugins would you recommend me to install? Any other tips or suggestions?

That's my point, last thing I want to do is end up in a page with 1000 plugins since I have no idea of what would be good or not, so I would rather see opinions of people actually using any good plugins

Holy crap Fryman. That's a big move for you. Aren't in you Mexico or something right now?

As for plugins, not sure which ones you'd like out of the list of thousands. Will you put adsense on your blog? If you do, you'll definitely want Adsense deluxe. I couldn't survive without it. It's also good if you want to add Chitika.

If you want to increase pageviews, you can also add the 'related posts' and 'most popular posts' plugins. But that doesn't work until you've had your blog up and running for awhile and have a good amount of posts.

Any RSS plugins are handy as well if you want subscribers. The one that adds all the chicklets in your sidebar is nice.

You'll definitely want to activate your Akismet plugin to keep the spam at bay, but you'll need an API key first. You get that by signing up at Wordpress.COM, not ORG.

I read through the post yulia linked to, but I didn't see this one. It's one of the first ones I install anytime I start a new blog. Great for SEO purposes...

Other than that, the other thread has some good ones. I would suggest setting up your blog first and playing around with it first before you decide which plugins you'll want. I f*cked up my blog big time when I started messing around with plugins for the first time...but then you're probably not as daft as I am when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Anyway, good luck with the move.

Be sure to install (or just activate) Akismet, that's the only one that's almost necessary.

Have a go at feedburner's plugin. Good to keep track of your subscribers...

Good luck on the move, fryman... :)

Use the KISS principle. (Keep It Simple Stupid). Otherwise your blog works overtime doing stuff it does not need to do (or make any difference to how your blog looks or operates).

Hope the move goes all well for you Fryman.

    Col :)
