Does anyone have experience creating a WordPress Plugin as link bait? Was it a success? How many link backs did you get?
Don't know too much about plugins. But I know that if you create a nice template, then you'll get many backlinks .
A good template can naturally get you more backlinks off smaller sites, good plugins can get you less links but from more authority sites. Personally, a good plugin slapped my site right out of the sandbox, so I find it more useful.
Templates would get you more backlinks in a shorter time but plugins are definitely better. If you create a plugin that is really required, popular sites that run on WP, will pick it up and link to you. People who really depend upon their websites that are running on WP is sure to have many readers/users, many backlinks, good pr, and will definitely want a plugin that solves something for them. If your plugin suits them, they will install it and give you a backlink. In essence you will get a better backlink. Templates on the other hand will be tried by any body who has a site running WP, so the quality of backlinks, wont be too good. Why dont you do both ?
I might do both eventually, but I'm a better programmer than I am graphically inclined. I already the plugin 30% completed, but I'm still working on an options page so that it can be modified. I also need to write instructions and create a download page. Lots to do.
