To do so, you have to change your permalink structure. Go to Admin Panel > Settings > Permalinks, and set your permalink structure to be %postname%, then click on Save Changes. Warning: changing your permalink current permalink structure can hurt your SERP. If you have been blogging for a while, it might be good to install Platinum SEO Pack (a Wordpress plugin) so you can safely make the switch.
@Ikki, don't the most recent versions of wordpress automatically issue a 301 when a request for the old url is made ?
@gr8liverpoolfan: as far as I know, nope. However, I might be wrong. Is there any official documentation on this? If so, please post a link to it so other people (including me) can learn about it.
