    Hi

Will it be possible to have wordpress as CMS for a content heavy website say shaving 30,000 articles and with mutlile categories and sub categories so that look and feel is almost like a newspaper / magazine site and you have a customised home page as well as cutsomised category home page.

I am interested in knowing the same - if WordPress gives any problems for very large systems (Lets say - 1,00,000 posts).

Yes I think, Wordpress can handle that. Because its the database issue not exactly wordpress. Furthermore, you'll need a good customised template though or else end up in a mess. However if you wish to deal things on seperate blogs then you should go for Wordpress MU otherwise not.

I would imagine that Wordpress would be able to handle a large server load of 1m pages per day...

I bet there are a number of popular blogs that achieve that sort of traffic

AllThingsD.com is owned by Wall Street Journal and is running on WordPress. This site is the best example of a large CMS with a magazine looking design.

i have a web that have 150,000 post (article) and running on cheap shared hosting, even sometimes got down, but it more because our plugin / theme issue ..

for normal / fresh install, it took +/- 12 query to database for loading one page using wordpress,
+ your plugin + your custom theme = a lots of query to database.

so you need to prevent this with wisely choose what plugin / output you want.

php cache + database cache + post cache + widget cache are help too ..

Anest is right. If you are going to use Wordpress as CMS, one of the biggest things to be wary of are the plugins and themes.

Here are some cache plugins that are really good for Wordpress(MU):

    DB Cache/ DB Cache Reloaded
WP Super Cache ( Developed by MU guru creator )
W3 Total Cache ( Very useful, but many bugs, should wait until later release (2010 Summer? )

Also, Wordpress has so many scripts and documentation around that anyone with no web experience could make a social media site with articles, a forum, and user profiles in around a day ( like using Buddy Press ).

Remember though: Using Wordpress as a CMS, make sure your codes, scripts and themes are good. Some scripts and themes aren't made well and get hacked. Many people try to go away from Wordpress if site gets real big because you have a lot of bells and whistles, and they could cause problems, or be vulnerable to hackers.

Check out the MU forums: they have a lot of websites examples.
