WordPress Manual Instal Or Fantastico

    I'm with Hostgator & have been waiting for Fantastico to update
    WordPress to 2.1.3 & they still haven't.

    I have two web sites at Hostgator. The new install would be on
    the add on domain & not in the root.

    I'm worried about how buggy 2.1.3 is, Fantastico or Hostgator still
    hasn't switched over to the new version & it's been weeks.

    Should I go with 2.1.2 & use Fantastico to install it
    or manually install 2.1.3

    2.2 is over due for completion by three days.

    Installing or upgrading WP is so simple why not try doing it yourself? Trust me, just read the instructions and you will have it up and running in no time flat :D

    Would you use Fantastico with Cpanel or do a manual install.

    Do 2.1.2 and then when fantastico comes out with the update, just click update in fantastico! :)

    Personally I always go with a manual install. And if you follow proper upgrading procedures like below, you'd be fine.

    1. Backup your entire web folder (www, public_html etc.)
    2. Backup your database using phpmyadmin or similar.
    3. Disable all plugins.
    4. Extract the Wordpress bundle into a temporary folder.
    5. Copy and overwrite from this temporary folder into your existing Wordpress folder.
    6. Load up your site in one window.
    7. Load up your admin area in another.
    8. Enable your plugins one by one. Refresh the first window. If anything breaks, disable the plugin. Or find a newer version and upgrade.

    That's it!

    I've been using 2.1.3 since it came out and no problems whatsoever.

    I think the only problem doing a manual install is not being able to do
    a quick update with Fantastico when 2.2 comes out right or can I.

    @highbids: if there are no database changes, you just copy over the files. After backing up everything, to be on the safe side of course. And even if there is a database change, you just run the upgrade script.

    I have never used Fantastico because I don't think it does a backup before upgrading - things do become a little more complicated once you have a few plugins.

    always manual... if for no other reason than for the ability to have the main admin be titled something other than admin without changing it in the database.
