Digg, Twitter, Facebook. Can you use WordPress to build such a site or is this not realistic? Thanks.
Ok. I guess maybe hand coding with PHP is the way these sites are made. I read Twitter uses Ruby on Rails. I will have to look into what that is exactly. Can anyone tell me how I can find out how some of these sites are made? Thanks.
Outside of the source code, it's doubtful. Most of the time it's custom coding. You can build a Digg like site using Pligg, that's not anything like WP. If you are looking for example WP sites that are well known or high volume, here is a short list: http://en.wordpress.com/notable-users/, and also here.
Wordpress is used by some rather large companies from what im aware. High traffic sites. All of those mentioned are custom built sites, dont try to convert a blogging platform into something like that.
Thanks for the info. I am not sure exactly what kind of site I want to create. I think I will have to learn PHP and create a custom site. Perhaps Drupal can aid in my learning.
Drupal is excellent if you want to create a big website - but if I were you, I wouldn't aim for Digg right on. Build smaller websites first... then go for digg!
for facebook and twitter search google , facebook clone or twitter clone. for digg: www.pligg.com is a free CMS which can build social bookmarking site, wp is only a blogging platform and u can use it as a CMS but wordpress is not really a CMS.
