Wordpress, is it possible to install in in the root directory for multiple domains?

    Hi

I already have a website up which I created using wordpress.

I had to upload and install wordpress in the directory where I planned to have my index.php.

    My question is:

I have various directories for my various domains that I have registered.

Do I have to install wordpress in each and every one of those directories whereby I plan to create a website, or is there a way I can upload and install it in the root, once only, and somehow use it to create webpages for my various domains that are located in the various subfolders?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's called a network.... can be quite complicated for the non-technical user, but here is the manual: WordPress Network

@Arimor, as Martin has indicated, you can use the network capabilities of WordPress 3+ (formerly WPMU) if you want to have a single WP install that serves multiple sites.

However, many webhosts (HostGator and BlueHost to name a few) offer easy 1 click WordPress installs into each of your new Add-on domains. Its a pretty painless process and very easy to do to have WordPress running each of your websites.

If you are interested in automated WordPress installs into each of your domains (sites), and your host has given you cpanel, look for the "fansastico" or "simplescripts" installer to add WordPress to each of your sites.

If you are unsure, tell us who your web host is and perhaps we can help more.

Thank you very much for your replies.

I'll do some more investigation with my webhost (1and1) and see whether they offer those facilities.

    Thanks once again.

I ran into a huge amount of trouble with two wordpress occurances installed, for two different domains on the root level of the same hosting company. My navigation went nuts and I had to re-install one WP occurance in a subdirectory. It was a real pain, and is not the best for SEO, but there appeared to be no other way. I'm farely well versed in CSS and HTML but no very little about MYSQL and PHP.

I will need to do the same once again very soon on a different host, with a different control panel and am somewhat gun shy. Any suggestions!!!!

1and1 sucks horribly by using Wordpress. The automatic updates always hang and you'll get the "Currently under maintenance" message but all you do is delete the .maintenance file out of your web directory. You will do a lot better by moving to a VPS server, like I did, where you have more flexibility. You can pay an extra $10 - 15 per month for a cPanel license for your VPS server if you do not feel like dealing with the command line.

I have many WP sites with bluehost, each with a separate wordpress install. I'm unfamiliar with the network setup, although I've heard about it in the past, I really didn't pay much attention to it. I need to look into this. Thanks for the reminder and the link.

Bluehost is excellent for installing multiple wordpress blogs on their unlimited hosting. Its really is as easy as a few clicks.

I agree that 1and1 is a terrible host to run a wordpress network, if they even allow it. You shouldn't run a network on shared hosting anyway, no matter what host it is.
